a sign of a household that honors God and is dedicated to his service. Where did this distinctive custom arise from? The Hebrew word m’zuzah is the word for the doorjamb or frame. In biblical times, the doorpost of a house represented the family and its values. Due to its visibility, the doorpost was a place to show one’s identity. Thus, it is not surprising that God commanded the blood of the first Passover lamb to be applied to the m’zuzah (“doorpost”) of each Israelite household (see Exodus 12:21–22).
